What drives the USD/UAH rate

The USD/UAH rate is set by supply and demand on the Ukrainian interbank market. Main drivers: export volumes (grain, metals, IT services — dollar inflow), energy imports (outflow), NBU interventions, war risks, inflation outlook, refinancing rate. Since 2024 Ukraine has run a managed-float regime — the NBU sells reserves during demand spikes to smooth the rate.

Where to buy dollars in Ukraine

Three options: bank (0.5–1% commission, cap of UAH 150K/month per person), licensed exchange offices (rate 0.3–0.8 UAH worse than bank), bank mobile apps (PrivatBank, monobank, Sense — no commission, their own rate). For sums above UAH 200K/day — banks only, ID required.

The dollar — world reserve currency

USD remains the dominant currency of international settlement: 58% of global reserves, 88% of all FX trades. For Ukraine, the dollar is the primary currency of foreign-trade contracts and export earnings. Most foreign-currency deposits in Ukrainian banks are USD-denominated.
